Oklahoma Roots

I’ve never been one to watch sports on television, but like many Americans, I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the Magnificent 7 in the 1996 Olympics.

Seven young athletic, graceful and talented women made history as the first U.S. team to win a gold medal in gymnastics. Shannon Miller was one of those young women.

I know this because I lived in Oklahoma at the time, and Shannon being from Edmond, was all over the news that year. Even today, she is one of the most famous of the state’s daughters.

Sixteen years later, Shannon and I have both made our way to sunny Florida.

When my editor at Family! magazine asked me to interview Ms. Miller for the spring issue, I was excited and more than a little proud of our Oklahoma darling.

Now a wife, mother and successful business woman, Shannon has made a name for herself as the voice of women’s health on the First Coast. Her company Shannon Miller Lifestyle provides resources and information to help women incorporate fitness and nutrition into their busy lives.

Gracious, funny and down-to-earth, speaking with Shannon reminded me of the one thing I miss most about Oklahoma—the wonderful people I met there.
