Sunny Saturday mornings are perfect in Northeast Florida. I wake up at 9, stretch luxuriously and take a few moments to appreciate the Cheshire Cat-like grin on my face.
Once I do get out of bed, my favorite Saturday morning ritual is driving down to Riverside to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers.
More than a grocery shopping trip, the Riverside Arts Market (RAM) is an EVENT.
Started by the Riverside Avondale Preservation Society four years ago to entice residents from other neighborhoods to explore Riverside’s eclectic shops and restaurants, RAM has grown tremendously in its short history. At first a small venue for artists and farmers, the market has morphed into a weekly festival complete with food vendors, street performers, artists, musicians and children’s activities.
On any Saturday, I can grab a sweet tea or fruit-filled fancy punch and spend hours just walking around, perusing the wares of local artists and artisans. From beautifully crusted loaves of freshly baked bread to delicately painted wine glasses, the displays of regional talent remind me why there’s no place in the world I’d rather live.
Sometimes, I sit in the venue’s amphitheater and listen to local musicians perform against the soothing backdrop of the St. Johns River. Where else could you get live music and groceries in the same location? It’s such a treat.
I had a palm reading at RAM once. Apparently, I’m getting ready to do a lot more traveling. Sounds alright by me! Which brings me to an important point—Riverside is an artistic, liberal community. You’re likely to see all kinds at the arts market. Personally, I love that.
RAM is still appropriate for families, however. Magicians, face painters and balloon twisters make regular appearances for the kids, and even four-legged family members are welcome. Of course, leashes are required for them.
Located on Riverside Drive under the Interstate 95 overpass, RAM is open every Saturday, March through December from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Produce vendors sell fruits and vegetables in this location throughout the winter from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. riversideartsmarket.com
